Interview Preparation
Interviews are obviously an integral part of the recruitment process. You could be the best engineer in the world but if you don’t interview well it will limit your career opportunities. This is why we advise you to follow these simple steps before your interview:
- Know your CV inside out.
- Do your homework on your potential employer; have a look on the website, speak to people in the know so you can gather as much information as you can.
- Research your interviewer. Most people are on LinkedIn these days so have a look on their profiles.
- Have ready made examples of different working scenarios you have come across.
- Prepare for common questions such as:
- What are your strengths and weaknesses? – Always turn your weaknesses into a positive and discuss how you are addressing them.
- What do you know about our company?
- How did you get into this particular line of work?
- Once you’ve done your homework, set some time aside with your consultant for a pre interview chat to ensure you are best prepared.
The Dos and Don’ts of interviewing:
Dos:
- Ensure you know the exact place and time. Nothing worse than being late, it really does set a bad first impression. Better to be a few minutes early, but not too early.
- Dress appropriately. If you are interviewing for an engineer position smart casual is normally fine. However, if you are applying for a senior position best to wear a dark suit with matching shirt and tie. It’s much better to be overdressed than underdressed. Always best to confirm with your agent beforehand.
- Wait until you are offered a chair before sitting down.
- Eye contact – always look the interviewer in the eye.
- Always best to allow the interviewer to describe the role and duties early on so you can relate your experience and skillset to the role.
Don’ts:
- Slouch – it comes across like you’re not interested or too laid back. Try to look alert and express interest.
- DO NOT lie – answer truthfully.
- Leave any questions on salary, holidays etc for the second stage or get in touch with Bauhaus to discuss this for you. If the interviewer brings it up feel free to do so.
Remember Bauhaus are with you every step of the way. If you need any further advice please do not hesitate to get in touch.
